ABOUT THE ARTIST
Purly Gates is a well-seasoned, uniquely creative, entertaining singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who enjoys singing for (and with) folks of all ages. She is based in Central Texas, with frequent concert tours to various parts of the country as well. Year-round she performs at festivals, corporate events, coffeehouses, clubs, schools, libraries, retirement and senior communities…. wherever people gather!
ABOUT THE PROGRAMS
Purly’s programs are filled with original songs, popular swing tunes from the 1930’s-40’s, humorous folk, cowboy and traditional songs plus a few instrumentals as well. Audiences enjoy singing along on the familiar songs. Purly will quickly have them joining in on the chorus of ones they’ve never heard before. She may also recite some cowboy poetry, or tell a tall tale—if the moment is right. Purly can tickle even the toughest funny bone!
As a solo act, she accompanies her vocals with guitar, banjo, ukulele, accordion and harmonica ….. but not all at the same time! At some point, she’ll most likely pull out a Limberjack (a small, wooden dancing puppet). “Jack” is a sure-fire hit with all ages!
The DUO/TRIO options add fiddle or mandolin, and bass. Both add vocal texture and more instrumental styles, plus the option for a simple square dance, the ‘old-style’ crowd mixer.
A typical show runs about 50 minutes. So everyone can hear clearly, Purly usually sets up a small PA system, unless quality equipment is available at the venue. For very small groups and rooms, the PA system may not be necessary.
“You were wonderful! I love the way you mix old folk songs and original tunes. The different instruments you play and the little bits of history you throw in to your act make it unique.”
~Jane Schaefer, Texas Book Festival, Austin, TX
“Purly is such a pro—a great entertainer and musician. She really knows how to entertain a crowd. Catchy tunes, fun lyrics, and a twinkle in her eye. She’s got comfort food for your ears! Our concert on the common had children dancing, adults singing along, and smiles all around.”
~Mary Lou O’Neil, Entertainment Committee/ Hancock, NH Summer Concert Series
“We are an Assisted and Independent Living senior community and every one of our residents loves it when Purly performs! As a musician myself, I can attest to her talent. Her vocals are great, and the music selection she plays is enjoyed by all, including staff.”
~Shana Davis, Activ. Director/Bentley Commons, Keene, NH
